The Omen

===LETTER FROM PORTLAND===

The other night I had a good omen!

It had been a really long night at the bar: I had been accused of stealing by the owners (infuriating), there was a fistfight between patrons, a 911 phone call, and an after-hours dance party. It took me forever to clean up and lock up. When I finally got home it was maybe 4:45 am.

So I'm sitting there in the car, in front of my apartment. I'm so tired that I'm not moving, just sitting there behind the wheel. The sun is just starting to come up; it's really misty, kind of bluish light, no one around.

Just then, there is a flash in my peripheral vision. Through the driver's-side window, I see this woman, moving very fast. She's on roller blades, propelling herself half with the motion of her legs, half with a pair of ski poles that she is vigorously thrusting in front of her. She's in her mid-40's, maybe, with a long wiry ponytail protruding from underneath her helmet. She's wearing skating gloves, elbow pads and jeans.

And she's topless.

She's making a loud clatter on the asphalt. She's only there for a moment, and then, whoosh, she turns the corner at the end of my block, and just like that, she's gone.

Did I really just see that?

In retrospect, she was not particularly attractive: very pale, some flab. But all together, it was like seeing an angel pass by! So sudden, so swift, so unbelievable. I consider this to be a very good omen for future endeavors. Also: it happened on Bastille Day, and indeed, there was something very liberating about this woman's approach to skating!
