Casual Fridays
Today my boss sent me an email that said in the title "come see me in my office asap". Then, after 15 minutes, when I failed to run to her office to see what was the matter (I was working and I hadn't checked my emails lately), she called me on my extension and asked me to come in. "You're supposed to set an example for other employees as the human resources specialist, so why are you wearing beach sandals again?" Her husband and co-boss agreed "Yes, totally inappropriate casual business attire". Then, they both started laughing. I acted innocent, blurted out some kind of half ass apology and then left. I then spent the next hour composing a letter that I will never give to her about worker productivity and employee morale, the benefits of a casual friday, etc. What I did send (an hour later), was an email response to her original email saying, "Was this in regards to Casual Friday?" She replied with an angry, "who told you we have a casual friday policy? we do not." I replied back with "No one told me that, but it might not be a bad idea". She responded with "I don't want that kind of thing in my organization". I considered replying with, "You call this organized?", but instead just continued writing the letter that I will never send. I think, thanks to their criticism of my shoes, I may have wasted an entire 2 hours dealing with my resulting frustrations. I think this is a perfect example of why not to treat your workers like dirt. This evening we had an employee barbeque at my garage and we vented about our bosses for 5 hours straight. It occurred to me that perhaps they purposely create drama in the workplace so that we won't realize how bored we all are with these tedious real estate transactions.
